Scientific Description
Mission and objectives
The National Archives is the UK government's official archive and publisher. Our collection of over 11 million historical government and public records is one of the largest in the world. We hold some of our most iconic national documents, dating back over 1,000 years and have a complete archive of UK government websites (1996–Present). Our twenty-first century role is to collect, manage and preserve the future of the government record, both digital and physical, and to make it as accessible and available as possible. We were formed between 2003-2006 through the consolidation of four government bodies: the Public Record Office; the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts; Her Majesty’s Stationary Office; and the Office of Public Sector Information. We are an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice and a government department in our own right. Since 2011 we have been responsible for overseeing and advising the archive sector across England. Our collections represent an rich and extensive resource and as an originator and supporter of research, we maintain an innovative programme to develop and test new ideas, for the benefit of government, the public and the research and archive communities. We are recognised as an Independent Research Organisation by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and our research is centred around five core, interdisciplinary themes: • Rethinking the Record• People, Place, Rule• Risk, Uncertainty and Trust• Openness, Access and Use• Impact, Value and AffectOur researchers have a breadth of individual specialisms and include historians, archivists and conservation scientists. We look to collaborate with different disciplines such as digital humanities and computer science to solve challenges facing the archive sector, especially in relation to digital preservation and innovation. To find out more about our research and how to collaborate with us, please visit our research webpages: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/about/our-research-and-academic-collaboration/
