Scientific Description
Mission and objectives
The Biological Collection Access Service for Europe(BioCASe) is a suite of standards, software packages and data portals enabling online publication and discovery of primary biodiversity (occurrence) data. The term "BioCASe" is used simultaneously for both the products developed and the network based upon these products. On one side, it includes tools allowing data providers to publish data to networks such as BioCASe and others. On the other side, data portal software can be used for aggregating data from several providers and granting users access to this unified data pool. Main components are- the Access to Biological Collection Data schema (ABCD schema),- the BioCASe protocol defining rules for transmitting schema-defined XML data (such as ABCD) across network,- the BioCASe Provider Software as a tool for publishing data using XML schemas (such as ABCD) and the BioCASe protocol,- and data portal software that can be used to set up arbitrary network.Currently, the BioCASe Provider Software is used in over 100 installations in 25 countries worldwide, publishing an estimated 35 million occurrence records. Five taxonomically or geographically specialized data portals exists, allowing users to access data published with BioCASe or other data provision tools.
