Scientific Description
Mission and objectives
The National Institute for Earth Physics (NIEP) operates a strong motion network designed to monitor earthquakes with Ml > 3.5 Richter on Romanian territory. The network of strong motion accelerographs in Romania was installed in the framework of an international cooperative research programme (42 accelerometers in cooperation with the Geophysical Institute of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) and national projects for the high potential of a large earthquake.Currently NIEP has a network of 130 digital accelerometers installed in free field; 25 in Bucharest and the rest evenly distributed across the country. This network consists of digital accelerometers equipped with acceleration sensors (EpiSensor) +/- 2 g). To achieve the ShakeMap and assess the damage caused by earthquakes, 92 of these accelerometers transmit data in real time to NIEP for automatic data processing and analysis.
