Scientific Description
Mission and objectives
The Modane Underground Laboratory (Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane) is a multidisciplinary platform operated by CNRS and CEA that is located in Modane (France) under 1700 m of rock to reduce the cosmic ray flux by a factor of 2.5 millions. LSM hosts experiments requiring very low radioactive background in particle, nuclear and astroparticle physics, environmental sciences (retro-observation, climat, oceanography,...) , nano/micro-electronics and biology. For low radioactivity measurements, sixteen low-background gamma spectrometers are installed in the laboratory. The main activities in fundamental physics are related to neutrino physics with the tracking SuperNEMO detector and the search for dark matter with the the cryogenic EDELWEISS experiment. LSM hosts international experiments and has an agreement of cooperation with JINR Dubna (Russia) and CTU Prague (Czech Republic).

Services
Acces to the laboratory
The LSM is a multidisciplinary platform hosting experiments requiring very low radioactive conditions.
Equipment
Very low radioactive gamma spectrometer
Ge diodes built with very low radioactive materials and protected.
EDELWEISS
Cryogenic detector looking for dark matter with Ge bolometer.
SuperNEMO
Search of neutrinomess double beta decay with a detector associating tracker and calorimter.
Biology room
Dedicated room for study in biology requiring very low radioacttive envrionment.
Radon-free air facility
Production of 150 m3/h of an air with 15 mBq/m3 of radon (1000 times less than in the air of the laboratory). This air is flushed around the experiement installed in the laboratory to suppress background noise coming from radon in the air of the laboratory.
