Scientific Description
Mission and objectives
The Computing Centre of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics (CC-IN2P3) is a service and research unit belonging to CNRS. A major French research infrastructure, it is responsible for providing researchers involved in corpuscular physics experiments with computing and data storage resources.CC-IN2P3 receives its funding mainly through the CNRS and an agreement with the Institute of Research on the Fundamental Laws of the Universe (IRFU) run by the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA).The main services offered by CC-IN2P3 are the storage and processing of large volumes of data and the transfer of these data over very high-speed international networks. The CC-IN2P3 also developed an expertise in the domain of virtualization, as in cloud computing for instance. The CC-IN2P3 serves and teams up with more than 70 international collaborations in physics and belongs to a international network of computing centers specialized in analysis and data treatment for research in physics. The centre uses the appropriate equipment, expertise and software to deliver a reliable, robust service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. More than 2500 people regularly use CC-IN2P3’s services.

Small)scale Openstack IaaS Cloud. Participates in European efforts incloud federation.

Large disk and mass storage facility

Shared by experiments after yearly mediation. Accessed through various software stacks (DCache, XRootD, IRods, HPSS).

High Throughput Computing Platform

Shared by scientific experiments after yearly mediation.

Grid operation

Operates the largest site of the French National Grid Initiative (NGI) as part of the European Grid Infrastructure. Hosts the technical direction, training and support of the NGI.

Equipment
Network

Dedicated 10Gb/s connection with CERN (tested at 100Gb/s) plus 10Gb/s (through Germany) and 2x10Gb/s (through Paris). Point-of-Presence for local, regional and national networks.

Computing Farm

More than 30,000 virtual computing cores hosted by more than 2000 compute and stoage nodes. These machines run a Scientific Linux Operating System and are accessed through the Univa Grid Engine batch system. They develop a total of 312 000 HEP-SPEC 2006.

Mass Storage System

4 tape libraries of 10,000 slots each. The current storage capacity is of 30PB while the theoretical maximal capacity is of 340 PB. The libraries are managed by the HPSS system.

Disk Storage System

SAN and NAS storage offering a total capacity of 20PB.
