Scientific Description
Mission and objectives
JRC-Geel operates a laboratory for ultra low-level radioactivity measurements inside the 225 m deep underground facility HADES, which is operated by the organisation EURIDICE and located at the site of the Belgian nuclear centre SCKā€¢CEN. JRC is renting the necessary space from EURIDCE. JRC-Geel established its laboratory in 1992. The measurements have been in support of EU-polices and the JRC work programme and is since 2000 part of the network CELLAR (Collaboration of European Low-level underground Laboratories). Furthemore, it has since 2005 contributed to the international double beta decay experiment GERDA. Since 2014 HADES is part of the JRC external access programme.
