Scientific Description
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is aResearch Infrastructure for ground-basedvery high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. With two host sites in the southern andnorthern hemispheres – on the EuropeanSouthern Observatory (ESO) at Paranalgrounds in Chile and at the Instituto deAstrofisica de Canarias (IAC) in Roque delos Muchachos Observatory in Spain – it willextend the study of astrophysical origin ofgamma-rays at energies of a few tens of GeVand above, and investigate cosmic nonthermal processes. CTA will provide the firstcomplete and detailed view of the universein this part of the radiation spectrum and willcontribute towards a better understanding ofastrophysical and cosmological processes, such as the origin of cosmic rays and theirrole in the Universe, the nature and varietyof particle acceleration around black holesand the ultimate composition of matterand physics beyond the Standard Model.
