Scientific Description
The Flemish Marine Data and Information Centre (FMDC) is a young and modern data centre that archives data and information pursuant to the latest international standards (IODE) and furthermore puts this data and information at the disposal of scientists and policy makers. The FMDC is mainly a service centre. Within the scope of numerous cooperation projects the centre provides expertise and logistic support for the development of data and information systems, the archiving of datasets, the communication of projects (e.g. developing and hosting websites), etc. The FMDC is specialized in the development of information systems, taxonomic and biogeographic databases as well as databases that collect monitoring and survey data. Most of these databases are available online and at the disposal of all interested persons through a user-friendly search interface. The online inventory can be used to search databases from different marine research disciplines and with an international scope. The FMDC is operated through the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) and closely cooperates with national and international organisations such as IOC/IODE, ICES and MarBEF, the European node of OBIS, etc.

Marine data management

The data management team at the FMDC is responsible for the archiving, documenting, integration, quality control and redistribution of physico-chemical, taxonomical, biogeographical, ecological, chemical and toxicological data.

Development of marine data and information systems

Over the years, the FMDC has developed several marine data and information systems. The most important ones are the Integrated Marine Information System (IMIS), the Integrated Marine Environmental Readings and Samples database (IMERS), the Marine Data Archive (MDA), Aphia (a taxonomic register), and Marine Regions (a standard list of marine geo-referenced place names and areas).

Development and hosting of project websites

The FMDC is developing and hosting several project websites. A full overview can be found at

Marine data and information exchange

Many data and information systems developed by the FMDC have been implemented into several websites and projects.
