Scientific Description
Soluble conjugated polymers, small molecules and nanomaterials offer novel combinations of processing and functional attributes, enabling the manufacturing of novel forms of devices, with the first organic light emitting diode (OLED) products in the form of displays already in the market. Research advances are still needed in the continued pursuit of optimised performance for organic solar cells, lighting panels and sensors.The general objectives of our research unit are: 1) To achieve excellence and breakthrough advances in science and technology by creating an infrastructure capable of taking a leading role in molecular electronics and photonics; 2) To provide a stimulating and challenging environment for the high level training of a new generation of versatile scientists and engineers; 3) To contribute to the development of solution-based organic photovoltaic (OPV) technology and other emerging molecular electronic devices; 4) To contribute to the large scale deployment of low cost photovoltaic cells and modules, thereby challenging global warming. This is achieved by focusing on organic electronic materials synthesis, alternative processing methods of organic and hybrid electronic materials and device structures, building organic and hybrid solar cell devices, studying device losses and lifetime performance and researching novel electrodes and interfaces.

Glove box (low oxygen/moisture content), organic material and metal evaporation, spin-coating, doctor blading, inkjet printing, surface profilometry, ambient temperature atomic force microscopy, four-point resistivity probing system, UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, solar simulator for device testing, external quantum efficiency, contact angle measurement, organic chemical lab dedicated to the synthesis and property characterisation of organic materials, gel permeation chromatography, cyclic voltammetry, accelerated and outdoor solar cell lifetime testing.
