Scientific Description
The Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) combines the three national supercomputing centres High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS), Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), and Leibniz Supercomputing Centre, Garching near Munich (LRZ) into Germany’s foremost supercomputing institution. Each GCS centre hosts a supercomputer well beyond the 1 Petaflops performance mark (1 petaflops = 1 quadrillion floating point operations per second, or a 1 with 15 zeros), placing all three institutions amongst the most powerful computing centres worldwide. With in total more than 20 petaflops for use (number growing), GCS offers by far the largest and most powerful supercomputing infrastructure in Europe to serve a broad range of science and industrial research activities in various disciplines.GCS also provides first-class training opportunities for both the national and European High Performance Computing (HPC) communities. More than 50 highly qualified scientists acting as trainers host over 60 courses (or 150 course days) per year. Due to its wealth of training opportunities and the vast experience of its trainers, GCS is one of the leading HPC training institutions in all of Europe.

Supercomputers of GCS: SuperMUC of LRZ (top), Hazel Hen of HLRS (bottom, left), JUQUEEN of JSC (bottom, right) HPC Services and Computing Time GCS boosts computational science and engineering by offering a world-class computing and networking infrastructure. Each GCS centre hosts supercomputer systems in the multi-petascale performance range, placing all three individual GCS institutions amongst the most powerful computing centres in the world. In total, computing power of more than 20 Petaflops (quadrillion performance operations per second) is available. The system architectures implemented at the three GCS centres are complementary to ensure that a broad spectrum of applications can be accommodated.

The Visualization Centres of GCS

Computer simulations have long since become vital tools for research and development in various scientific fields. Virtual laboratories and test stands have significantly helped create new methods and research possibilities for researchers and engineers alike and complement the vast computing power of the GCS HPC systems. All three GCS centres feature state-of-the-art visualisation facilities
