Scientific Description
CABI is a non-for-profit international organization that improves people’s lives by providing information and applying scientific expertise to solve problems in agriculture and the environment. Its genetic resources collection (culture collection) is a biological resource of 30 000 living microorganisms stored using state-of-the-art technologies. The resource is supported by a research infrastructure that includes molecular and proteomic technologies and services such as microbial identification and industrial/environmental testing.CABI's mission is to improve people's lives worldwide by providing information and applying expertise to solve problems in agriculture and the environment. We achieve our mission by:• Creating, managing, curating and disseminating information• Putting know-how in people's hands• Improving food security through climate smart agriculture and good agricultural practices• Helping farmers to trade more of what they sow• Supporting farmers by increasing their capacity to grow better quality crops, and fight pests and diseases• Bringing science from the lab to the field• Protecting livelihoods and biodiversity from invasive species and other threats• Combating threats to agriculture and the environment

Equipment
Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight (MALDI-ToF) Mass Spectrometry
Sanger sequencer - ABI 3130 Genetic Analyser

Produces very accurate sequences of up to 900bp from pure cultures; the basis of CABI's ISO17025-accredited molecular identifications of bacteria and fungi. In addition to fungi and bacteria We have also worked extensively with nematodes and with plant material and lately we have had considerable success with obtaining DNA barcodes of arthropods such as fall armyworm.

Freeze-Dryer
Cryostorage System
General Microbiology Infrastructure
Illumina MiSeq - Next Generation Sequencer
MinION - Oxford Nanopore Technologies

An excellent partner for the CABI MiSeq in whole genome studies where the very long scaffold sequences that it can generate can then be used to pin on the very high quality (but much shorter) MiSeq reads. The future for the MinION is very much focussed on field-based work and this is where it could be of immense value to CABI.
