Scientific Description
The solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance group of the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM, Radboud University Nijmegen) established a materials science oriented NMR facility operating 4 state-of-the-art solid-state NMR spectrometers and 1 home-built spectrometer with DNP capabilities. A wide-bore 20T (850 MHz) solid-state NMR spectrometer is the flagship of the facility. A broad range of commercial and home built probes is available. The facility is particularly unique for the miniaturization of NMR methodology allowing the analysis of mass-limited samples and thin films. The research organized in three layers: applied projects which are mainly focused on materials research for energy storage and conversion, self-assembly in biomimetic materials, and structure-function relations in synthetic polymers. Within these projects the structure directing forces and transport and dynamics can be identified as fundamental underlying concepts that the group is exploring to gain an in-depth understanding of the principles that bring a specific functionality to a molecular construct or material. This approach requires appropriate methodology. Therefor the group focuses on enabling technologies with the ambition to progress from bulk characterization to an approach that allows unraveling of the inner workings of the smallest functional units in relation to the processes and functionalities under investigation.
