Scientific Description
The Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) is based in Heraklion (Crete), and is conducting basic and applied research in established and emerging areas of Biomedical science. IMBB is part of the Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), one of the largest research centers in Greece. Research at IMBB is diverse and falls into the following areas: Gene Regulation, Developmental Genetics, Neurosciences, Host-Pathogen Interactions and Immunity, Protein Function and Structural Biology. Our multidisciplinary research is supported by state-of-the-art experimental facilities and is enhanced by extensive collaborations and interactions with the other co-located Institutes of FORTH that conduct research in physical, computing and mathematical sciences. Additional scientific interactions and collaborations have been established with many departments at the University of Crete, as well as the broader academic and research community in Greece and the rest of Europe. Our multidisciplinary approaches and collaborative environment is ideal for training of undergraduate and PhD students as well as for postdoctoral researchers.

Microchemistry - DNA synthesis lab

We synthesize high quality synthetic DNA (oligos, primers, probes from 10 bases to 90 bases long) with an MWG synthesizer, which can provide 24 different DNA sequences (oligos) per synthesis. The provided oligos, purified, quantified and lyophilized, are sent within 3 working days to the clients. For information and orders, please contact: Mrs. EFTERPI KARPELI – Lab responsible

Fermentation Facility

The FF focuses on controlled production of biomass (mainly microbial) over a wide range of controlled conditions (culture media, temperature, pH, aeration, stirring, etc). The FF houses all equipment needed for the maintenance, growth, collection and storage of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, etc). Cell mass is produced according to strict quality criteria and is accompanied with Specifications and Technical data sheet that includes all relevant information on growth conditions. What we offer: Optimization of your protein expression or biomass growth and upscale to our bioreactors. You just bring us a plate with your desired bacterial strain and we deliver you cell pellet (from 20lt or 30lt culture).

Protein Purification

Large scale (mg to gram) protein purification of tagged or untagged proteins. Our team is highly-experienced in downstream processing steps and can help you optimize your protein purification scheme. A series of different types of chromatography can be tested to your protein (size exclusion, Ion exchange, affinity, hydrophobic interaction). The PFF’s, FPLC equipments are capable of up to 100 ml/min flow rates.

Raw data and data analysis

Raw data in BAM fastq format are delivered via a secure FTP site or are shipped on a portable hard drive depending upon the size of the dataset Data Analysis includes: • Base calling and demultiplexing • Quality-adapter trimmed reads • De novo/reference mapping using platform specific, open source or commercial software (CLC Genomics) • On-target and coverage statistics • Variant summary report including variant coordinates, base pair changes, dbSNP and coding region information Further bioinformatics analysis is also possible, depending on your experiment, in collaboration with our recently constituted Bioinformatics group.

Next Generation DNA/RNA Sequencing

The Core Facility is a full service facility that provides expertise in experimental handling for the entire process of sequencing, including library construction, qualification of sequencing libraries by qPCR, and sequence analysis on an Illumina Nextseq500 or Ion Torrent Proton or PGM instruments. Services include: • Whole genome sequencing • Targeted region sequencing • Whole exome sequencing • RNA-Seq • ChIP-Seq
