Scientific Description
SILVA is a comprehensive web resource for up to date, quality-controlled databases of aligned ribosomal RNA (rDNA) gene sequences from the Bacteria, Archaea and Eukaryota domains and supplementary online services founded in 2007. The application spectrum of the SILVA databases ranges from biodiversity analysis, quality control to medical diagnostics in academia and industry.

Data Analysis - SILVAngs

SILVAngs is a data analysis service for ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) amplicon reads from high-throughput sequencing (next-generation sequencing (NGS)) approaches based on an automatic software pipeline. It uses the SILVA rDNA databases, taxonomies, and alignments as a reference. It facilitates the classification of rDNA reads and provides a wealth of results (tables, graphs and sequence files) for download.

Training

Training courses for ARB and SILVA are regularly offered.

User Support

User support is offered by comprehensive documentation on the webpage as well as FAQs and mailing-lists, Twitter and direct e-mail contacts.

Access to Online Resource for Aligned Ribosomal RNA Sequence Data

Access to an online resource for quality checked and aligned ribosomal RNA sequence data. Silva provides ribosomal RNA gene datasets for the domains Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya. Preconfigured datasets can be downloaded from the website as Reference and Parc databases. Custom tailored datasets can be generated for download with extended search functions on the website. Services for the alignment and classification of rDNA sequences are offered as well as the evaluation of probes and primers. All datasets are quality checked and curated especially with respect to taxonomy. All sequence data are provided in the universal FASTA as well as the specific ARB format. The ARB software tool can be installed locally to allow extended manipulation of the SILVA databases.
