Scientific Description
The increased awareness regarding the depletion of energy sources in the context of a significant climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions has led to the escalation of the number of those calling for the implementation of sound policies in order to achieve sustainable development at both national and European level. Promoting energy from renewable sources is a timely must. The role of BIOENERGY Research Infrastructure is to build and support sustainable development through research and innovation in the field of Bioenergy – Biomass – Biofuels in the context of knowledge-based economy. The specific aim of BIOENERGY is to enable researchers to have access to high-level experimental facilities and services, encouraging and facilitating cooperative research.BIOENERGY promotes a favorable climate for research & innovation, entrepreneurship and stimulating cooperation between business and research in order to exploit the research results. Through BIOENRGY, the specialists from research institutes, academic or SMEs have access to a remarkable endowment corresponding to the multidisciplinary character of research - design, specific to working teams, allowing the approach of the project from the research phase up to the technology transfer.BIOENERGY represents a real support for Romanian and European researchers aimed to increase the scientific performance by obtaining scientific top results, national and international competitive, because research and development of biofuels, installation and technologies that meet environmental standards are a must of our days. One important attribute of the BIOENERGY Research Infrastructure is represented by the strong interactions existing between the chemists, engineers, physicists which ensure an integrated approach to studying the complex problems related to bioenergy – biomass - biofuels. The BIOENERGY research infrastructure, namely the existing specialists and equipment, represents real opportunities in answering both the current scientific challenges of the alternative fuel technologies and the science of environmental impacts and mitigation that are related with energy conversion processes. Work ranges from experimental models (technologies and installation) to pilot models (technologies and installations) and technology transfer.Issues that can be addressed in the BIOENERGY framework: o Biofuels of 3rd and 4th generation;o The impact of biofuels use & obtaining on biodiversity; o Development of green pre-treatment technologies to ensure the improvement of lignocellulosic biomass potential;o Developing ICIA technology for obtaining biogas for efficiency increase;o Valorification of byproducts resulted in the biofuels obtaining process;o Development of innovative photovoltaic cells; o Inventory and determination of greenhouse gases on biofuel chain: raw materials – biofuel obtaining– deployment – biofuel use;o Understanding the long-term fate of geologically stored CO2;o Optimising the integration of CO2 capture into power plants;o New CO2 storing methods;o New methods for obtaining and capturing bio-hydrogen.o Growth assessment of microalgae for biofuels productiono Development of technologies for microalgal biofuel production
