Scientific Description
JRC-Geel operates a laboratory for ultra low-level radioactivity measurements inside the 225 m deep underground facility HADES, which is operated by the organisation EURIDICE and located at the site of the Belgian nuclear centre SCK•CEN. JRC is renting the necessary space from EURIDCE. JRC-Geel established its laboratory in 1992. The measurements have been in support of EU-polices and the JRC work programme and is since 2000 part of the network CELLAR (Collaboration of European Low-level underground Laboratories). Furthemore, it has since 2005 contributed to the international double beta decay experiment GERDA. Since 2014 HADES is part of the JRC external access programme.
