Scientific Description
The Center for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), as an independent unit of the Ruđer Bošković Institute, is the only academic NMR facility in Croatia conducting high resolution NMR measurements of liquid samples. Service and expertise in the field of NMR spectroscopy are offered to the academic community, government institutions and industry. The Center for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), the only academic NMR facility in Croatia conducting high resolution NMR measurements of liquid samples, was established in November 2003 as an independent unit of the Ruđer Bošković Institute. The Center conducts scientific research and provides services for the scientists and researchers from the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI) and the Universities of Zagreb, Rijeka, Split and Osijek. The Center also provides educational and professional support to researchers from government institutions and the pharmaceutical industry.Research at the Center for NMR includes various topics in organic, inorganic, bioorganic and pharmaceutical chemistry. Theoretical calculations of molecular structures and NMR spectral parameters are performed in order to support the experimental measurements. Some of the investigations are focused on natural compounds and photochemistry products.Another activity in the Glass Group is mainly focused on structure-electrical property studies of vitreous and crystalline materials. Closely related is an investigation of the correlation between the microstructure and electrical conductivity of ceramics and various types of glasses. The scientists from the Centre participate in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate studies at Universities of Zagreb, Split, Rijeka and Osijek. Active collaborations are maintained with research groups from the USA, Turkey, Austria, Slovenia, Macedonia, Brazil, Russia, and the Czech Republic. The basic equipment of the Centre consists of Bruker Avance 300 and 600 MHz NMR spectrometers. One older instrument, Varian Gemini 300 MHz NMR spectrometer is lent to the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry of the University of Zagreb.
